Every now and then the stars will align and I will read exactly the right book at exactly the right time. The book’s author says things in the exact way I need to hear them, and the overarching message of the book changes my perspective (and my life) forever.

This has only happened a few times in my life. It happened with Blue Like Jazz. It happened with Velvet Elvis. It happened with A New Kind of Christian. It happened with Total Money Makeover (seriously). And just recently, it happened with The Blue Parakeet.

Being in vocational ministry has caused me to treat the Bible like a textbook, among other things. I hate that. Thankfully Scot McKnight spoke directly to that and helped revive the way I engage the Word.
