10 in 10 (Again)
October 26th, 2009 - Uncategorized - 11 Comments »Here are ten more things that I’m willing to bet you haven’t thought of in ten years:
1. Lunchables – I can’t be certain, but these may have been the primary ticket to my second-tier popularity throughout school. I shudder to think where I would have been without them.
2. Dittos – Copies before copies were mainstream, circa 1988. I’ll never forget the smudgy, purple text, and the smell of a teacher who had just spent her lunch break in front of that machine.
3. Five Alive – A distant cousin of orange juice. A smarter, cooler, more popular cousin, I might add.
4. Grandmama – Unfortunately for Larry Johnson, this is what he’ll always be known for.
5. Book It – Who could forget Pizza Hut’s infamous reading program? Read (or write down that you read) a certain amount during the week and you’d score a free personal pan pizza and a button, which I’m certain I wore to school.
6. Blue Sportscenter Intro – Arguably the greatest and most aesthetically-pleasing set in Sportscenter history. I can’t find a clip of it anywhere.
7. Bo Knows – Somehow, I think this ad campaign is making a comeback. Seriously.
8. Mullet Humor – This was easily my favorite and most-frequented website in college.
9. Ren and Stimpy – Not only did I watch this show on Nickelodeon way past when I should have, but I proudly sported a R&S hat well into middle school.
10. George H.W. Bush – Remember that guy? Wasn’t he president at some point?
What are some things you bet the rest of us haven’t thought of in ten years?

So true. But I can say that I was thinking about Lunchables the other day. We are proudly passing on the tradition of Lunchables on to our daughter. The lovely, crackery goodness that is created when double-deckering buttery crackers, turkey rounds and American cheese squares is intoxicating.
But have you seen them lately? Oscar Meyer was not content to dominate just the cracker/lunchmeat/cheese market. No. They now have pizza lunchables, chicken nugget lunchables, taco, nacho, burgers, …. The list is endless. Lunchables used to come in those little square boxes, now it takes an industrial life to hoist it upon the back of my Pre-K daughter.
Times … they are a changin'.
I had Ren and Stempy boxers that I got free off the back of a box of Honeycomb. They were perfect for use as pajamas. Yes, those were the 90s. I had a ponytail then as well.
Lunchables were for the rich kids — I had to trade my whole lunch just to get a sample. Of course my lunch was made up of a brown bag – with plain chips in a sandwich bag, bologna sandwich with mayo and a knock-off Fruit Roll Up (which were also for the rich kids).
Dittos…wow. Loved that smell. Until it cost my friend his life.
video cassette rewinder machines.
be kind. rewind.
Keeping in form with Grandmama, how about NBA Starter jackets that were super popular btw 1993-1995? Or how about any of the Chicago Bulls' starting centers during the title years ('91-'93, '96-'98)…..Bill Cartwright, Bill Wennington, Luc Longley……The Man in the Middle!
…..playing popcorn on a trampoline, the default move when the other person wasn't paying attention………
oh, snap. you just took me back with "book it." i was all up in those personal pan pizzas!! what about slap bracelets? or the cartoon pole position?
when sit -coms were geared toward kids. Any and all of them had families with kids who were "just like me" in them home improvement, full house, family matters, charles in charge, whose the boss, even hanging with mr. cooper was good because he coached a b ball team and darn it, that was cool.
now the only sit com on is 2 and half men, and i can barely sit through 5 minutes of charlie sheen chasing women, before that laugh track gets on my nerves and I turn it to one of the 54 million crime dramas that are on…

1. Lunchables – wife is a school teacher, so still see these
3. Five Alive – you're the only reason i ever drank this growing up.
5. Book It – Once again, playing the wife's a teacher card. Saw some coupons the other day. You want to grab lunch next week? I'll buy if you can handle a personal pan pizza.
