Redesigned!

February 1st, 2010 - Uncategorized - 13 Comments »

So, here’s the new design. Let’s take a tour, shall we?

Ridiculous Photo of My Face
This will serve as my daily reminder not take myself too seriously. And to give me an idea of what I’d look like with tinted glasses.

Social Networking Buttons
These are the different ways to connect with me besides this blog. Oh, and the big orange button? That’s a way for you to subscribe to this blog. Not having to type in the 16 characters of my web address every time will hold off the Carpal Tunnel for at least a week and a half.

New Sub-Heading
I’m not sure how to say this, but I’ve decided to make this sub-heading also be the subtitle of my upcoming book, Everyday Absurdities. I know, I know. We voted and that one didn’t win. But I really wasn’t crazy about the ones that did. I received a lot of advice from some good friends and they encouraged me to go with whichever one I really wanted (after all, it is my book, they reasoned). They also said you’d forgive me. Would it help if I told you I was still mailing the lamp and hard drive to the winner?

Sponsor/Ad Space

That’s right. I’m selling real estate on my sidebar. Right now Mayim Bialik is occupying one of the slots (she insisted we all click on it and watch her TV intro), but she can easily be replaced. Click here, or on the sponsor tab up top to learn more about it.

Share Specific Posts
Let’s say, hypothetically, you really like a particular post and want to share it with the world. At the bottom of each post you have the option of emailing it to someone, sharing it on Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, and LinkedIn, or submitting it to other sites like Digg and StumbleUpon. I know what you’re thinking, and yes, I am working on a way for you to fax the post to someone.

Twitter Bird
See that bird up there in the top right corner? That’s Derek. I pay him $4.75/hour to watch my Twitter page and shout my updates.

Series
Soon, but not yet, clicking on the Series tab will allow you to view posts by their different categories. So, if you are like a few people I’ve talked to who only come here for The Weekly Six, you’ll be able to do so with ease.

Videos Pages

Soon, but not yet, all of my videos will be organized into different pages so you don’t have to scroll half-a-mile down to get to the bottom.

Comment Bubble ↑
I’d love to hear what you think about the new design, so in order to leave a comment, click the comment bubble in the top right corner of each post. Ironically, the number in the center is also how I measure my self-worth for the day.

That’s about it. My good friends over at Minds Eye Design worked really hard to get this up and running for me, so if you like it and want/need a redesign, click on their logo over in the sidebar to get more info.

NOTE: It’s only about 90% ready, so it’s going to be a little buggy for the next couple days.

you've made a good decision with the subtitle. you've broken my trust though, and that will take a while to earn back.

I like the new design! Looks very professional and stuff. And, I like that you've named your friend, Derek, but I will admit that he is getting less than minimum wage… if he's an immigrant bird, you're in trouble.

  3. kristen says:

love the new design. love the bird's name and curious if he really shouts at you…if so, i am interested in what his voice sounds like??? and finally, LOVE, jim gaffigan….any idea when he has new stuff coming out? congrats on the new ventures and good luck! i'd like to pre-order a copy of your book :)

  4. accountant says:

do you realize that if Derek is watching your Twitter 24 hours a day, you will be paying him $42,610 a year? are you sure you can afford that?

otherwise, the site design is money.

  5. Kunte Kente says:

does Derek have good aim, b/c you and Tripp are pretty close to the firing zone

    great job on the site.

I think it's awesome that you decided to support Parkview with your colors and gays with your bird. You might want to center your menu. It's a few pixels off from your post. Try some other fonts. Great Job!

  7. Greta says:

Glad you went with the subtitle you wanted. And Tripp made me laugh just a little.

  8. Kevin says:

I also approve of the subtitle, and I am UNANIMOUS in that.
The site looks great too — very clean and easy to navigate.
All it needs is a scratch-and-sniff button.

I also love the new redesign. Only one question/recommendation. The button to leave comments should be at the bottom of the post, not the top. When I'm done reading the post, my screen will naturally be at the bottom, except on the rare occasion I decide to read your blog backwards. And please don't underestimate the laziness of your typical reader. I will be very unlikely to go the extra 2 clicks and 1.5 seconds to scroll all the way back up to leave a comment.

I love your new design. My only complaint is that I don't understand the whole twitter thing and I usually see like 7 of them in a row on the side and the bird only lets me see one, but maybe I'm better off that way. I applaud your subtitle decision. Next to mine, the one you picked is the best.

  11. Rob Shepherd says:

Love the new look. Great stuff.
