5 Questions You’ve Never Been Asked: E1

February 20th, 2010 - 5 Questions - 38 Comments »

Here is the inaugural episode of 5 Questions You’ve Never Been Asked. Today’s episode features the one and only Bryan Allain. Note: Be thinking of some suggestions for ways to improve this as you watch it.

So, here’s where you come in. This is the first episode. I know there are some things I can to do improve it. Any thoughts?

For instance…
+ Is it too long? Too short?
+ Do I need titles/graphics to spice things up?
+ Should I not have worn my red hoodie?
+ Did my questions suck? If so, you have some suggestions?

I’d really, really love any feedback you can give. I’m planning on making this a regular segment on Saturdays, so I want to make it good.

[Update: I re-uploaded the video and think I may have fixed the volume problem. Thanks for all the input!]

love the idea! make it a bit shorter and fix the volume and I'll watch every time.

Gordon typed exactly what I would have typed, except I would have said, "every single time" for extra emphasis.

Dude, this Bryan guy lives in Lancaster? Same here.

  • jcneely

good idea. i think you could also edit some of the extra chatter, and it would be great.
i found myself just wanting to know, "what's the next question!"

  • http://morethanuseless.com Tom

I agree with the other stuff people said here, but I also wanted to mention that I dig this idea for a series. Really funny.

Ditto the volume comments. The squeal is hard to take. I loved the Jon Acuff bit, but mostly because I just like Jon Acuff. He is so funny that even the mention of his name makes me feel like laughing. Right there is when I bought in. Other than volume, I would say that I want to see the energy you give out in your videos and I would move it along a bit. Some music and/or sound effects and editing out the space would make this awesome! I agree with jcneely, good idea! And I love his idea of baiting the viewer with what the next question would be. Something like, "Come back next time when I'll be asking Jon Acuff if he's ever owned a man-purse."

I think the "what's the next question" and "move it along a bit" and "extra chatter" comments are everybody's nice way of saying "more Tyler, less Bryan". i'm crushed.

    • http://www.mypoorhusband.blogspot.com Rachael

      actually, no.

      • http://jacobs3rs.blogspot.com Jacob

        but yes…
        haha i kid, i kid.

Good stuff. I was a little disoriented by how much larger Bryan's head appears compared to yours.

    • http://intensedebate.com/people/tylerstanton Tyler Stanton

There's really nothing we could do about that. His head is just that big.

  • http://intensedebate.com/people/jack42 jack42

I like it. There was only one point where I felt "get on with it" about the 5-ish minute mark (give or take 30 seconds). Better sound for the guest would be great. A little more "movement" rather than just two talking heads, maybe make your side smaller (narrower or smaller corner box) when the focus isn't on you so much. Maybe have setup like you're on side watching a TV screen which contains video of guest. Lots of ways to spice things up (we live in a great technological age!).

    • http://intensedebate.com/people/tylerstanton Tyler Stanton

Great ideas! Unfortunately, my video editing skills are that of a 3rd grader, so you won't be seeing too much complexity in that area. With the program I have, it's either split screen or one of us in a little box in the corner.

  • Jenni

Y'all are both hilarious. The questions were good…the answers were funny. I love this idea. The "Mama Mia" theory is absolutely correct… same way you can't do an Australian accent without first saying "G'day Mate".

    • http://intensedebate.com/people/tylerstanton Tyler Stanton

Great call. I'll have to try that out.

  • Zac

Volume issue is the only thing that truly was bad about this at all. Fix that and this will be cool.

the volume is a little annoying…but, i think its a good idea.

    • http://intensedebate.com/people/tylerstanton Tyler Stanton

      i think i fixed it.

  • http://amishcountryliving.com Lee Ann Miller

Funny. A little long. Yes- graphics and some music/sound is a good call. Cool hoodie. Like the hoodie. Bryan's picture wasn't as "crisp" as yours Tyler. I wanna be guinea pig #11 or #4. Or #33. And I didn't mind Bryan's volume at all. Good idea and fun!

  • Jared

I like it the way it is. Time is good, and if you start trying to make it perfect instead of spontaneous it won't be as funny. The picture of your guest doesn't matter just what he or she says, content is king.

    • http://intensedebate.com/people/tylerstanton Tyler Stanton

Totally agree with spontaneity being key. I don't want to do anything to mess with that element.

  • nate

i think everyone's feedback is right on.

you might also consider asking folks to submit questions to be asked. this would help to alleviate some of the excruciating pressure of coming up with 5 memorable, original, geniusly clever questions every stinkin' week.

I would also like to request that Nancy be the subject of the feature very very soon. Either her, or King Buttermore III

Both you and the person you are interviewing should be wearing the sunglasses you are wearing on your blog's banner.

  • http://tothetuneoftim.blogspot.com Tim McGeary

I got to see the edited video, so I think the edits worked out well.

All I have to say is I wouldn't recommend Googling amazing lips…. just a tip. :) and Bryan, it seems Charlize Theron has edged you out of 3rd place. Sorry, buddy.

  • http://www.jimmycalhoun.com Jimmy

i liked it.. being that it was the first one it needs to flow quicker ( could be done in the edit) Theme music!!! Good Job enjoy all you do
    God bless

  • stacikristine

I thought this was great! I usually try to laugh on the inside (at work) but I actually let it slip this time! Good stuff.

  • http://jacobs3rs.blogspot.com Jacob

Good first video sir. Borders would be nice (or at the very least a black vertical bar in the center dividing the two videos). You definitely should go with a logo and theme music… and a fancy intro logo move (some kind of sweet typography with the "5 Questions you've never been asked" would be cool) And as awful as it looks, a real mic does wonders (think greyscalegorilla.com… looks terrible, sounds great)

    • http://intensedebate.com/people/tylerstanton Tyler Stanton

There will definitely be an intro next time. You'll probably be disappointed with how basic it is though. I don't really have the editing skills you're calling for.

      • http://jacobs3rs.blogspot.com Jacob

Give me a color, font, music? and thoughts on an overall feel and I might donate some time to the cause.

since nobody else is gonna bring it up, i guess i have to.

anyone else a little put off when Tyler went all, "I was on an audition recently…"?

c'mon Tyler, don't be that guy.

(this coming from the guy who just watched this video for the sixth time.)

    • http://intensedebate.com/people/tylerstanton Tyler Stanton

Just for the record, I didn't get the part. Nor have I gotten the other 14 parts I've auditioned for. Does that help balance things out a bit?

I didn't read all the comments, so if this was brought up previously, sorry…Should the segment really be called "4 Questions you've never been asked before and 1 request to do an accent"?

    • http://intensedebate.com/people/tylerstanton Tyler Stanton

      touche.

  • http://intensedebate.com/people/tylerstanton Tyler Stanton

Those are actually some prescription glasses I picked up at Cool Thrift. I would wear them, but I can't leave them on for longer than 20 seconds or I'll get a migraine.

Just because only one other person said it, I second the request to even out the size of your heads.
It's more comfortable to watch a person who isn't all up in your grill.
