The Greatest Week of Television
May 20th, 2010 - Uncategorized - 24 Comments »I’ve written about my TV addiction before. I’ve also written about what I thought was the greatest week of TV in modern history. After some serious thought and meditation, though, I’ve come to the conclusion that starting yesterday, we’ve embarked on the best TV has ever had to offer.
Modern Family Finale, Last Night
This is my second favorite new show of the year. If you’re a lover of comedy and currently don’t watch this show, stop what you’re doing and download the entire season from iTunes. Then fake appendicitis and leave work early to watch them all in a row.
Community Finale, Tonight
I’m not too impressed with this show. I will continue to watch it, though, because of Troy. And Abed. And Pierce. And…Professor Chang. Dang it. Maybe I am impressed after all.
The Office Finale, Tonight
What’s even happening in this show anymore? Who cares. It’s The Office. The real question is when will Ed Helms (as Andy Bernard) get his own show?
30 Rock Finale, Tonight
Um, writers? I’m going to need some Dr. Leo Spaceman tonight, OK? I know it may be a tad late, but if you could make the entire episode revolve around him and Tracy, we’d all really appreciate it.
LOST Series Finale, Sunday
I’m going to breathe a sigh of relief when this one is over. Don’t get me wrong – I love it. But every week I feel like in order to keep up, I have to exert more brain energy than my four years of college combined. Thank goodness for Bryan Allain’s extreme dorkiness on the subject.
Celebrity Apprentice Finale, Sunday
I vote they change the expression “it’s like a train wreck – you can’t look away” to “it’s like Celebrity Apprentice – you can’t look away”. I don’t want to like it. I’m not proud of it. But man it’s good. I’m rooting heartily for Bret Michaels (which, interestingly, is a sentence I never thought I’d say).
24 Series Finale, Monday
If my calculations are correct, I’ve invested 166 hours into this show over the last seven years. Some may call it a waste of time. I call it a journey into manhood. You better believe I’ll be forcing my boys to log some serious time with Jack Bauer before they head off to college.
Biggest Loser Live Finale, Tuesday
Even though my boy Darris put up an unacceptable +2 last week, I’m hoping my $0.99 text vote will be the one that puts him in the final three. Even if you’ve never seen an episode, you need to tune into this one and see their drastic transformations. If your eyes remain dry, you have no soul.
Parenthood Finale, Tuesday
This is my favorite new show. If you go in expecting dramedy instead of comedy, it will be your favorite too.
Anyone else watch this much TV? What shows are you excited about this week?

I also love parenthood, but you should check out Justified on fx. It’s like a moden Walker Texas Ranger.
As parents of young children, we are prisoners in our own home from 7pm on. Therefore, we watch entirely too much television. Thank you for helping us not very guilty about this. Modern Family is #1 in my mind. And I would like to submit House season finale to the favorite week list(it brought tears to my eyes). I am already getting worried about what to do this summer now that the shows are on a break….help!
Def Lost. 24 has been so so for me this season. Although I do like Jack as a crazy guy running from the law. American Idol has not been as good as some past seasons, but I still enjoy it. And I love the Office and Modern Family. Plus it's NBA playoff time so I've been putting in some serious late hours watching games. And yes I do still love the NBA.
I recently started watching Modern Family after listening to our sons and daughter-in-laws just rave about it! I wish I had started watching it from the beginning-thank goodness for DVR's because it's on the same time as one of my other Fav's "Criminal Minds". This is the first season we've watched "Biggest Loser" also. You are so right- if your eyes remain dry-you have no soul. What an inspiration the contestants are!
TuesNight = TV night.
Biggest Loser, Parenthood (which is the best new show on tv).
And occasionally Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.
And recently have seen this ABC What Would You Do hidden camera show that's an interesting social experiment. Then I try to have it off as much as possible other days. Unless it's football season, then that's pretty much always on.
I recently started watching the community. In the past three days I watched episodes 1-23 of this season and I am very excited for the finale.
ps. you watch too much tv
Tyler,
Sweet fancy Moses! Have you seen the episode of the Ron Popeil series? Recently, there was one that focused on a device called the "Showtime Rotisserie."
When the audience screams "Set It and Forget It!" I practically passed out from sheer viewer delight! Am I the only one that's totally addicted to this show?
Dave
We will be watching American Idol. Yeah, it isn't nearly as good as years past, but still like watching it. Plus with DVR it makes it more enjoyable by fast forwarding past parts I don't like. I might have to give parenthood another try for by the advertising it looked like a comedy, but when I watched it, it looked like a drama. We haven't watched Biggest Loser, but plan on watching it this Tuesday probably even over American Idol for we want to see the results and Shay from last season. Tonight is definitely a Office & 30 Rock night. Ed Helms having his own show would be great. He makes me laugh so hard in the Office and Hangover.
I seriously need to go back and watch the Modern Family finale again to catch what I missed while I was rolling on the floor laughing. I'd like to shake the hands of the guys who write this stuff.
I only watch 24 on DVD when I have a week to do absolutely nothing – which happens every leap year, so I'm a few seasons behind.
Parenthood is a great show…can't believe I almost didn't give it a chance. glad we did.
Community totally redeemed itself with the painball episode…thought this show started off strong, but haven't stayed interested in it. I do love the Troy/Abed endings though.
There's two people in my life who routinely call me a dork. My wife Erica and Tyler. I let Erica do it because she's my best friend. Still not sure if Tyler can get away with it or if I'm going to punch him in the testes if I run into him next week.
i LOVE parenthood. As soon as an episode of lost is over, i change cover to it. it calms me down from my hysterical tears or hyperventilation that i just experienced in Lost. I want to be a Braverman. So so so badly.
I feel the same way about Lost. It is stressing me out. I don't think i breathe except in commerical breaks.
I disagree, this is not the greatest week of television. The greatest week is at the end of September when everything comes back and all the cliffhangers are resolved. My list of shows would totally put your list to shame (I had to switch to U-Verse because of Monday nights) However in order to remain a little mysterious I will avoid listing them all here.
I will say this though. Summertime is like rehab for my TV habit because I can narrow it down to just My Boys, Royal Pains, and Mad Men.
I'm preeetty sure I've listed here before all the shows I watch so I'll spare you the redundancy. Suffice it to say I have at least 2 shows a night (weeknights) and many times, I feel a strong need for a third DVR. (too many conflicts)
I completely agree Parenthood is #1, followed closely by, but in a different category, Modern Family at #2. And I would like you to know, Bob and I both watch and thoroughly enjoy Modern Family based solely on your recommendation.
Thankfully, I still subject myself to the Bachelor/Bachelorette trash so I actually have a show to look forward to during the summer. Oh! And So You Think You Can Dance – love that show!
P.S. I have the last 10 or so episodes of 24 on DVR and I can't bring myself to watch them. I think they'll be getting deleted soon.
dude, totally with you on the celebrity apprentice. can i say how foolish i think it was to fire curtis?! i know right?
i too, am a brett michaels fan now. i also think its important to note, that just because i’m cheering against holly, doesn’t mean i’m cheering for autism.
Sorry – I'm afraid your addiction was passed on from your mom. I didn't help that the t.v. was on constantly when you were growing up! I'm almost glad that summer is coming so I can get a little break from it all.
Dramedy? I might not watch Parenthood just because of that word.
It's amazing. The Office is probably the worst show of those you mentioned. 2 years ago, I would have fought anyone who said that. However, it has my loyalty until it's over. It's like I have to watch how it finishes! How did they do that to me?
Spot on about Biggest Loser. I have been rooting for Darus for awhile. I hope he gets in.
Parenthood is, by far, the best new show this year. Never watching a show have I gone from "omg, my daughter better not do that to me as a teen" to a deep belly laugh in such a short time.
While this isn't the best season of 24, it's the most riveting as to what Jack will do next. Knowing they will do a movie (which means even less limits) makes my mind go nuts about how many different directions they can make Jack go in the last 2 hours on Monday. One more thing – isn't Charles Logan one of the best swarmy and spineless characters ever written for TV? (yes, even I can't call him president)
Charles Logan is one of my husband's favorite characters ever. He's so good at that part!!
My favorite is still Tony. I miss him. Maybe Jack will break him out of prison (or wherever he is) for the movie.
Is it just me, or is Kristina the worst part of Parenthood? I can't figure out if it's her acting or just her lines, but every time she's on, it's just a sloppy mess. Half the time everything she says seems forced and rushed, and the other half it seems totally unscripted, like bad improv.
24 Celebrity Apprentise and the Mentalist.
Oh. Em. Gee. I cannot believe I had to work today (back to my boss=no internet browsing) and missed the opportunity to comment way earlier. And now I am too tired to be funny or interesting. I will say that I was so pulling for Daris after the marathon (and the upgrade on the haircut) then he gained 2 pounds, cried, and I wrote him off forever.
Parenthood is the best show ever, in the universe, ever.
Lost's finale alone is enough to make this the greatest week of television ever.
The Braves game yesterday didn't hurt either.
We're HUGE 24 fans. And The Office. We have all of the seasons (besides last year for The Office bc we weren't impressed) for both shows. I'm SOOO upset that 24 is ending, but it's time. At least they're going out with a bang. Last season is still my favorite for 24 though.
I think that we're going to try to start watching LOST from season one this summer. Our best friends are huge LOST fans, and we're going to trade 24 with them for LOST. And then next fall, we're gonna need something to replace 24, so we're going to try The Event. It looks pretty good!
