TV Catch Up

June 24th, 2010 - Uncategorized - 19 Comments »

Summer is here, which means most of television’s varsity players have taken a break until the fall. Sure, The Bachelorette can occupy some of your time. But what are you going to do with those hundreds of hours per week that you devoted to mindless, brain-numbing TV watching? I’ll tell you. You’re going to watch more TV…but you’re going to be strategic about it.

Now is the perfect time to catch up on all those shows that might have flown under your radar. So don’t waste your time with Wipeout or Losing It With Jillian this summer. Devote some serious time to these gems.

Arrested Development
In my humble (yet correct) opinion, this show has the best cast ever assembled. If you only watch one show on this list, make sure it’s this one. The complete first season will be available on Hulu (for free) starting July 1. Incredible timing.

The Office (UK Version)
The American Office is great. It really is. But you just haven’t lived until you’ve seen Ricky Gervais play the role of David Brent. It is truly perfect.

Breaking Bad
My current favorite show. I didn’t think it was possible for me to be so interested in a high-school-chemistry-teacher-turned-crystal-meth-cooker. But I am, and you will be too.

Extras*
Another Ricky Gervais classic. If dry humor isn’t your thing, chances are you won’t like this one. It’s the driest, most painfully awkward show I’ve ever seen…in a good way.

Curb Your Enthusiasm*
The deeper you get into this show, the funnier it becomes. I now look back on my list of Best TV Characters and feel the need to repent for the fact that Larry David was omitted. He’s my new #1. Just think of this show as a dryer, darker Seinfeld, with George Costanza in the leading role.

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia*
A guilty pleasure of the masses. Prepare to be offended by five of the most crass, self-serving jerks in television history. And prepare to be cracking up while you’re being offended.
Get it on Amazon | iTunes | Netflix

Entourage*
This show is produced by Mark Wahlberg and is said to be loosely based on his life in Hollywood. The acting is incredible all the way through, but Jeremy Piven playing Ari Gold is some of the best I’ve ever seen. With the new season starting on Sunday, iTunes has all the previous seasons on sale for less than $20.

What did I miss? What shows do we need in our lives?

**I just started watching Justified and Mad Men. I haven’t watched enough for them to have made the list, but I’m really loving them.

I agree completely about AD. I remember it was about this time last year Hulu offered it and I just came across it by chance. I'm not sure what rock I had been under, but I had never even heard of it. Now, it is easily one of my favorite all time sit coms.

Top Gear on BBC America? I know it's not a sitcom, but it's a hilarious hour of tv nonetheless.

I'm with you there on AD. And most of the other shows. I'm also downloading Breaking Bad as we speak.

One show I'd throw in is The Wire. My wife and I just recently got into that and have been immensely impressed. It's a crime drama, but it lacks the gimmicks and cliches of the usual shows of the genre. It's just feels more authentic.

Great list! How about "Wipeout" for mindless summer fun? (Also on Hulu)

Thanks for the *! I will be on guard.

That UK Office had some moments that I felt out-of-my-skin uncomforable. Dang funny stuff.

I started watching Entourage, and got through 3 seasons before I realized that I am not Vincent Chase and my friends are too selfish with their families and kids and careers to fix me meals and drive me around. I did start smoking weed though. Just kidding. But that would've been cool. Just kidding. Clean since '92. Just kidding. I was 8 then. Just kidding. I was 7.

Burn Notice is fantastic! USA has a ton of great shows that run in the off season, totally worth checking out their line up

    The West Wing. Unbelievable writing.

I love Arrested Development! So funny. Haven't seen any of the other ones (I just don't watch much TV) but my boyfriend loves Breaking Bad and It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, so I'm probably going to check those out when I'm finished with Arrested Development.

I fell in love with Arrested Development last year and immediately bought all seasons. Better Off Ted is pretty genius as well, my husband and I started watched that on Netflix recently. They gave it the axe before Season 2 concluded, of course. : Love those networks!

Arrested Development-pure awesomeness. What yahoo decided to cancel that show? The UK Office- beyond genius. I have never been so uncomfortable watching a tv show. You know, in a good way;)

My shows are so completely different than yours. That makes me a little sad, but hopeful that if you’re bored or suddenly turn 40 you’ll watch them: SYTYCD (if you don’t know what that stands for, nevermind but it makes me wanna move to New York and go to the Fame school-only I have no talent)Top Chef, Chopped, Next Food Network Star, Design Star, Cupcake Wars, My Fair Wedding with David Tutera. I understand that as a guy you’ll have to watch these shows after ordering a diet coke with lemon and a straw. They would give you lots of material, though.

i'd be lying if i said i didn't watch top chef and next food network star. oh, and i did watch SYTYCD, but couldn't continue watching because i'm not comfortable with the hatred that rises up in me when a certain female judge opens her mouth.

If you’re talking about Mary Murphy, she’s not on SYTYCD anymore so you’re safe now… That is if you can stand Mia Michaels.

What about Damages? That show is brilliant and it hooks you so fast.

Modern Family. Hilarious and great writing.

LOVE Arrested Development! I also love Jam & Jerusalem, a BBC show that is very difficult to find online, but totally worth it if you can!
