Returning to TV
July 12th, 2010 - Uncategorized - 4 Comments »Today’s guest post is from my good friend Philly, arguably the funniest photographer in America. You may remember him from his guest post last year when he ripped The Joke Associate a new one. He and his wife have just returned to the wonderful world of television after what I would consider an insane amount of time off. Here are some of his thoughts…

My wife and I just got a new TV. It’s our first HDTV and the first time we’ve had a DVR. We’ve been TV-less since 2006,* so I was excited to see how much has changed. Here are some of the biggest surprises and disappointments that I’ve encountered.
Surprise: The News is still on. Really? Are we still doing that? Does anyone under the age of 70 watch the evening news?
Disappointment: There is a show called “Effing Science” on G4 hosted by Napoleon Dynamite. I’ve seen a commercial, but haven’t watched this – and won’t – because of Napoleon. He was good at playing a loser because he is a loser. I don’t want to see anymore of him.
Surprise: Shows that were terrible is SD are even worse in HD. It seems like they are trying harder and still coming up blank.
Disappointment: Everything that has happened to Law & Order since I sold my last TV has made it worse. This includes all spin-offs from the original and cast changes to the original. Thank you TNT for continuing to rerun the good ones. You truly do know drama.
Surprise: Watching unathletic people get embarrassed on Wipeout is at least as entertaining and sometimes more entertaining than watching a professional athletic competition.
Disappointment: Daryl from The Office hosting Last Comic Standing. No explanation needed.
Surprise/Disappointment: Suffering through a commercial or two before realizing I could be skipping through them (thanks to the DVR) is simultaneously a great relief and an overwhelming moral defeat.
All you TV connoisseurs out there, help the Osborns out. What other things should they know about the world of television in 2010?
*Disclaimer: We were without a TV by choice, but don’t make the mistake of thinking I have a problem with watching TV – I couldn’t be friends with Tyler if I did. We still watched as much as we could on hulu, and Netflix. The best thing about not owning a TV happened the day after we sold our last one when a guy I had just met said “…I don’t watch very much TV…” all high and mighty so I immediately interrupted him saying “Oh really? We don’t even own a TV” as pompously as possible. It had been less than 24 hours.
Check out Philly’s site, Online Photo Resource, for an endless wealth of practical photography advice. Seriously, it’s dang good.
