10 Fall TV Observations

September 27th, 2010 - Uncategorized - 12 Comments »

1. Billy Baldwin is playing the exact same character in Parenthood as his brother Alec does in 30 Rock. Yes, I know they’re both Baldwins, but it appears that Billy just studied The Life and Times of Jack Donaghy instead of doing something creative with it.

2. Cameos make everything better. Matt Damon on 30 Rock. Justin Timberlake on SNL. Even Matt Leinart on The Biggest Loser. If I had a show, there would be a mandatory one cameo per week minimum.

3. Eric Stonestreet deserved his Emmy.*

4. Two-hour shows can and should be watched in one hour. As Bryan Allain mentioned in our Bachelorette post, at least half of a two-hour show is previewing what you’re about to see and reviewing what you’ve already seen. Cut that and the commercials out and you’ve got yourself a one-hour (and more bearable) Biggest Loser.

5. Donald Glover’s character in Community (Troy) is the most underrated character in prime time. Don’t get too comfortable at the top though Troy. Pierce and Abed are close behind.**

6. Networks give us good television. HBO, Showtime, and AMC give us great television. Sounds pretentious, I know, but it couldn’t be more true.***

7. My dream SNL show would consist of 3 Digital Shorts (two featuring Justin Timberlake) and a marathon Weekend Update segment. Those are the two things that are guaranteed to make me laugh every time. OK, fine. This made me laugh too.

8. I can’t rationalize my love for Glee. I also can’t deny it.

9. Dennis Reynolds of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia is the most offensive character in the history of television. He’s also the most fun to watch. Coincidence?

10. There are dozens of incredible shows that I’ll never see. I’m loaded down as it is – I can’t imagine adding any more to the plate. Well…maybe a couple more. Any suggestions?

What did I miss? Any observations to add to the list? Anything I’m wrong about?

* Cameron Tucker in Modern Family.
** Andy Bernard would be on the list, but now that he’s a big movie star and he’s graced The Office opening credits, “underrated” no longer applies.
*** See Dexter, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Entourage, Breaking Bad, Mad Men.

I'm glad you appreciate It's Always Sunny

  • Brit

You forgot United States of Tara! So good!

  • Nick

Come on now Tyler. Eric Cartman will always be the most offensive character on television. I dont recall Dennis ever trying to exterminate any race?

Raising Hope. I promise no regrets. Except maybe that you didn't have your own Princess Beyonce with an escaped criminal.

Don't know if you watched 'The Event', but if you didn't, I wouldn't worry about it. Any show that bills itself as 'LOST meets 24' is just asking to get cancelled…

  • Jordan

Two and a Half Men and Big Bang Theory.
They're only half hour shows and Jim Parsons completely deserved that Emmy.

  • Andrea

    The Big Bang Theory! Bazinga!

Tyler, how do you feel about the ven diagram representing the correlation between your fans and fans of The Big Bang Theory?
Also, does anyone else think Phil has stacked the Amazing Race to produce an all girl winning team this season?

Have you ever seen a show called "Diff'rent Strokes"? It is a cutting edge social commentary about a tiny African American boy who cuts-up with a fun-loving chimney sweep named Mrs. Garret by day, and fights crime by night.

I wanted to comment for two reasons. 1) The Nard Dog is my favorite member of The Office, so I was glad to see him get a mention. Also, what was Luke thinking? Nard Man? Please. 2) I just signed up for Intense Debate and wanted to get my first comment out of the way.

Have you watched How I Met Your Mother at all? Because it's freaking hilarious. You have to start from Season 1 to get all the inside jokes (and half of the humor), though. So if not, add that to any proverbial life to-do lists you have going on. I'm just happy to hear another person of otherwise celebrated good tastes out there willingly admitting their dorky Gleekdom along with me. Did that sentence even make sense? You get what I mean.

Also, ***The Big C on Showtime is fantastic. Laura Linney is so so great. I laugh. I cry. I mostly laugh. I can't say enough good things about it.
