More Trivial Things I’m Thankful For

(Just got my very own Facebook account. Let’s be friends.)
__

Like last year, I want to take a second this Thanksgiving week to reflect on the many trivial things in life that I’m really thankful for. This, of course, in addition to all the things that really matter. I tried not to duplicate any from last year, but some are just too good not to.

Netflix Instant Stream – Sure, the library isn’t as big as Hulu, but it still has some gems available. And now there’s a new $7.99-only-instant-stream-no-DVD package that makes it even better.

Nike+ – The sole reason I’m running right now. I’ll never run another non-documented mile in my life.

Friday Night Lights – I’ve never seen a show like it. It might be my favorite drama of all time.

Magazine Subscriptions – I don’t know what I like more: the actual content, or the way their matte finish feels in my hands as I walk from the mailbox back inside my house. In case you’re wondering, Fast Company, Wired, Mac Life, and Entertainment.

Sonicare – Quite possibly the sole reason I brush my teeth at night.

Flannel Sheets – I would have these on my bed all year long if I could. Amy, on the other hand, can’t stand them. So…we’ve compromised. One week. And it’s the best week of the year.

iPad - Obvious reasons.

The Lonely Island – Laughter, inspiration, and, hopefully, future competition.

Sweetwater 420

Createspace.com – If it didn’t make it so easy for me, Everyday Absurdities might still be a file on my hard drive.

Evernote – Syncs all of my can’t-lose ideas on my computer, my phone, and the Internet…for free.

Tim Ferriss – His first book changed my life. His blog is a wealth of quality information. Just a few more weeks until his next book hits the shelves.

Sports Talk Radio (680 The Fan) – One of my life’s biggest contradictions: I’m addicted to information I don’t really care about.

Boxee.tv

Harry Potter - I may shed a few tears next summer when it’s all over.

Craigslist and Amazon Marketplace – This is how we’re able to have stuff. If I want a book or music or gadget, I have to sell something else. Quite the part-time job, mind you.

Sunflower seeds – The only way to travel.

Vibram FiveFingers – Changed things up and tried Nike Frees the other day. After one run, I took them back and confirmed my FiveFinger cult member status for life.

Starbucks black coffee – Christmas blend in the red cup.

Seesmic – My Twitter desktop app of choice.

Bryan Allain’s Truth About videos - Very few non-Hollywood productions have made me laugh as hard as these.

Envelope-less deposit – The main reason I haven’t left Wells Fargo.

Pandora – Yes, I mentioned this last year. But I’ve since discovered some fantastic stations: George Winston for writing, Harry Connick, Jr. Holiday for Christmas music, Bon Iver and The Weepies for perpetual ear candy.

Blog comments – They are what tips are to a waiter.

What about you – what trivial things are you thankful for?

    I’m thankful for:

Twitter, or else I would’ve missed this awesome post!

    Booksneeze–free books, yo!

My Kindle–still trying to love it, still wanting an iPad instead

My bladder that wakes me up at 5:00–even though I hadn’t gone to bed until 1:00! How else would I have quiet time? (almost dozed back off. Sorry, Jesus).

Catalyst One Day–where I finally got to see “Listen, Listen” on the big screen.

You, sir, are absolutely right; these are amazingly trivial things to be thankful for. But, that's actually a good thing, because it means nothing really bad has happened to you. I have a few rather trivial things to be thankful for, such as:
my way cool, new truck (which sounds amazing!)

BBC America, because they air the awesome Top Gear

    Blu-ray DVD's

And, I'll steal two of yours, blog comments (they're like crack) and Bryan Allain's "Truth About" videos (also crack-like in their addictive appeal)

    • http://guidetowomen.wordpress.com/ Sharideth Smith

you had me at Top Gear

      • fireboy48

I love that show! I'm on the fence about the new U.S. version.

        • http://guidetowomen.wordpress.com/ Sharideth Smith

so far it's just all right. i'm hoping it improves. hard to beat the BBC version though.

    • Ben Pattison

Top Gear might be the greatest TV show on the planet. and myself being from England makes it even sweeter when I get some subtle jokes that jezzer makes that none of the Americans I sometimes watch with understand

I just spent some unnecessary time reading this and it was great!

Great list … I'm thankful for some of the same things and will check out some of the others.
So Nike+ can used with VFFs? I assumed you'd have to wear Nike shoes.

  • yousaidso

    many of the same
    1) FNL. Best show ever. I don't have direct TV, so i have to wait for the final season. And i am in love with Tim Riggins. Yes. I am.
    2) my iphone. We are about to celebrate our 1 year anniversary. still in the honeymoon phase
    3) my blog list. Keeps me entertained during work
    4) soy lattes
    5) etsy
    6) discogs.com. Allows my to feed my vinyl shopping habit without going broke
    7) Ryan Adams. Best thing that has ever happened to music. always in the mood to listen to him.

Despite getting screwed by the latest update to iOS, I am still thankful for my iPhone. It's only a measly little ol' 3G, but it still does what I need it to do… most of the time.

Trivial thing I'm thankful for – this blog. You keep us laughing. Thank you.

I'm curious – how did you use The 4-Hour Workweek in your life? I thought his ideas on marketing and product testing were genius, but I could never outsource myself to the degree he advocates.

  • Mark

Texas Forever. I have almost ordered a Tim Riggins jersey several times.

DVR, people who mow grass for a living, hair (I'm quickly losing mine so I'm thankful for the stuff I have on my back), people who don't dress up for weddings and funerals – saw a guy in a track jacket and jeans the other day at a funeral. I hate dressing up so I count on these people to make me not feel bad in my casual attire, and Tyler Stanton's blog. I know it sounds like I'm kissing up, but I'm thankful for your blog.

  • Tweena

Have you tried Grooveshark.com. In our office it has overtaken Pandora. You pick your own music and it's all streaming. I can make playlists and it even has audiobooks on it. I love it!

And I agree with the Netflix streaming. I just love scrolling through all the movies.

Tyler, With each new post about things you are thankful for, I am more and more convinced that if we were neighbors we would be best friends. Like DJ Tanner and Kimmy Gibbler. We could get together and watch Friday Night Lights on Netflix Instant Stream while drinking some Sweetwater 420. However, flannel sheets would probably not be involved.

Also, I feel like we are even now since I started watching Breaking Bad because of you and now you are watching FNL. I realize that one comment I left forever ago probably didn't even factor at all into your decision to start watching FNL, but I hate owing people anything so I'm claiming full credit for your love of it. You're welcome.

Engrish.com daily RSS feed to my inbox – don't start the day without one!

Anti-static wipes, otherwise my monitor would look all gunky.

Coffee (wait, you said trivial things).

    Dropbox.

    Chocolate chips.

I like flannel sheets by the way.

    Gmail.

Sweetwater 420 is good, but not my favorite… I live in an area where I can't always get Sweetwater. So if I'm home for the holidays, and I only get one opportunity to have a Sweetwater, I'm getting Sweetwater Blue… Which I am very thankful for.

  • http://www.thebeautifulsurrender.com Kelly

Clorox wipes. I love them. Bathroom, kitchen, car…wherever. They are so convenient!

Cakewrecks.blogspot.com – they crack me up on a regular basis

BTW- Bank of America has envelope-less deposit if you really don't like Wells Fargo.

  • David Robertson

    Zaxby's ice

    • tyler's mom

      Amen David Robertson!

  • http://www.thebeautifulsurrender.com Kelly

Haha DRob! That's a good one!

Okay but do you know about fleece sheets. They can turn your bed into a magical winter snuggle land. But Amy would probably think it was a stifling sweatbox.

I'm thankful for tv trays, 34 inch inseams, soda fountains, Punch Brothers, and Frasier reruns at bedtime.

  • LaceyKeigley

8:30 bedtime for at least five people living in our house.

    Wireless keyboards.

Little People. (The Fisher-Price variety, not the TLC show.)

    Ice Dream cones at Chick-fil-A.

    Wednesday Nights.

    Chapstick.

    Buffs.

  • aimee

    Big purses

    Short bangs.
    iPhone.
    Cruise control.
    White lies.
    Wine.
    Sound bytes.

Great list…a few thoughts in response…
    1) Nike+ – horribly inaccurate. I love hearing Lance Armstrong congratulate me, but when it's because I ran my fastest mile in 3 minutes and 22 seconds (although that would change my life) it kills me.
My replacement suggestion: 1) Runmeter, 2) RunKeeper Pro or 3) MapMyRun

    2) Friday Night Lights…YES! Amazing show! It never disappoints. Just wish more people would watch it so we can secure its spot on our televisions.

    3) Sonicare…I am intrigued

    4) iPad … Santa…please?

    5) Envelope-less depostis – with Chase, you can use your iphone to make your deposits!!!

    • Tyler Stanton

true, the chase/iphone deposit thing is much cooler. much, much cooler. i just can't muster up the energy to go through the process of switching banks. that, and i'm hoping they eventually get that cool technology.i've had some accuracy issues with nike+ too, but i've found the only real way around that is to run with my iphone to utilize the gps. the reality is, i'm just not willing to run with my phone. i use a nano. do those other things work with nanos?……………….tyler stanton
