Things I Learned and Loved in 2010

December 20th, 2010 - Uncategorized - 26 Comments »

I learned that Craigslist can be a pretty good part time job. We made $1,720 in 2010 with less than 10 hours of total work.*

I learned that our video Things You Can’t Do When You’re Not a Dog is most popular in…Brazil?

Thanks to Born to Run, I learned about the wonderful world of barefoot running, and absolutely loved my Vibram FiveFingers purchase.

I learned how to fold a fitted sheet.

I learned that I could cancel cable and still be able to watch 99.9% of what I watched before. Only now I’ll be saving $1,280.64 in 2011.*

I loved Tim Ferriss books. Many of you have asked me why, and I think the main reason is this – even when he is talking about stuff that doesn’t directly apply to me, he consistently causes me to challenge conventional thinking. And not just about work. Fitness, eating, time management, money, etc, etc, etc. Awesome stuff.

I learned that half marathons are 98% mental. Maybe even 99%.

I learned a lot about self-publishing (thanks mistakes!). Book Two will be a better experience for everyone. I promise.

I learned that Don Miller, one of my favorite authors of all time, isn’t all I assumed he’d be.

I loved tubemogul.com. Upload a video once, have it distributed to about 15 different sites automatically – for free.

I learned about the glory of french press coffee.

I loved being a dad.

I learned that it takes precisely 6.5 weeks to be able to laugh about a bombed performance in front of 13,000 people.

I learned the power and beauty of FREE – Google Voice, Mint.com, Evernote.com, Grooveshark.com, Google Docs, Gimp.org, and a library card (to name a few) have been revolutionary.*

I loved working at the Lake Lucerne Starbucks, which [cue emotional music] will be closing its doors on December 28.

I learned that being form-tackled by Jerome Bettis is both terrifying and exhilarating at the same time.

I loved Dexter and Friday Night Lights. And I loved finding out about both of them four seasons into their series, enabling us to watch six in a row if we so desired.

I learned that there’s a lot of animosity between people with kids and people without kids.

I learned that the worst thing about rappelling 100ft from the rafters of Gwinnett Arena is knowing two months in advance that you’re going to have to rappel 100ft from the rafters of Gwinnett Arena.

I learned a lot of life lessons from religiously watching The Bachelorette.

I loved turning 30.

I learned that my wife is insanely (tri)athletic.

I loved a ton of books. In addition to the ones already mentioned, these were my favorite:

A Million Miles in a Thousand Years by Don Miller
The War of Art by Steven Pressfield
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows by JK Rowling
Crush It by Gary Vaynerchuk
Born Standing Up by Steve Martin
Rework by Jason Fried and David Heinemeier Hansson

I loved tracking runs with Nike+ and RunKeeper. Turns out I’m a data/statistics junkie.

I learned that (right now) the iPad is pretty much just a toy. But…it’s the best toy I own.

I learned that Bryan Allain really does live in Intercourse.

I learned that, amidst the magic and excitement, Disney World can bring out the absolute worst in children and adults. I, unfortunately, am no exception.

What about you? What did you learn and/or love in 2010?

* I’ll be writing more about these topics in the future.

    Your Starbucks office-away-from-home is closing?
    Horrible.
    Can't you start a campaign?
Seems to me, you started some sort of campaign in 2010…what was it?
If only I had a clean glass of water to drink and ponder…
That was one of my collaborative loves of 2010 — stepping into a cause with 29 other bloggers to raise money for charity:water.
We didn't hit our goal, but many gave and I know there are people with clean drinking water now.
    Win-win.

I learned that following the right folks on Twitter and reading their respective blogs is WAY more effective than just randomly following anyone and everyone who sound neat. You have jumped to the top 5 of my favorite bloggers/Twittererers. Thanks for that
    Wayne

It's amazing when you cancel cable how you don't end up missing very much at all. We did that about six months ago and it's been awesome to not pay that bill.

I have learned that you can have a baby, sell your house and move into a new house in 7 months! CRAZY!

  • Kyle

You learned how to fold a fitted sheet. Unreal…

  • http://www.thegraceimages.blogspot.com Amy

Oh and start a new business! AHHH

  • http://Alifeaboutme.com Andrea

I learned that a lot can change in a year.

I learned the power a baby has over it’s parents is probably unmatched by anything in this world.

amen on disney world! the only thing magical is how cinderella is in 5 different places in the "kingdom" at one time.

  • Bryan

Never been more excited about learning to fold a fitted sheet. That lady makes it look so easy.

I learned the best way to look unattractive is to have snot frozen to your upper lip.
I learned that when you make a stupid comment in class, no one cares as much as you do.
I learned that it can be awesome not owning a car.
I learned that I can't get excited about watching basketball.
I loved washing dishes by hand all year.
I loved being able to stay in bed while my wife had to get up to work.
I loved realizing that Harvard students aren't absurdly brilliant like Zuckerburg.

  • jeffmcclung

What are you doing instead of cable?

    • Tyler Stanton

i'm working on a post about it. i'll give you all the juicy details then.

      • eforester

Whatever Tyler, you've been promising this post for weeks now. I'm about to stop believing everything you say. I just hope you write it before some poor kid from a 3rd world country starts paying comcast $200 for basic cable.

  • kevindeshazo

    Rework rocked my world.

Became a fan of FNL and Dexter this year as well. Glory. Just started Dexter last night actually. Also love the lack of cable and the awesome of the Roku.

I learned that even though I think I'm poor, I haven't earned a paycheck since May (started a business), yet live in the wealthiest city in my state and haven't missed a house/car/etc payment yet.

    Love(d) The Sing Off. (really)

  • Rodney Eason

Thank you for posting this list. 6.5 weeks to get over bombed performance? Thanks for your honesty.
In 2011, maybe y'all can shoot a video with Tim Keller. I would love to see him smile.

I read 4 out of the 6 books you mentioned. I will have to try the other 2 (thank you for not saying Linchpin!)
Have you read The Next Christians? That book rocked me to my core.

    Learned:

I can go grocery shopping with five children under seven. No longer a problem.

I cannot balance reading four books a month and homeschooling my children.

The envelope system is not my enemy.

    Loved:

    The laughter of my kids.

Regularly rearranging furniture and selling that furniture on craigslist.

Having so much more free time after 24 and Lost went off the air.

    Statistics eh?

There's an Alg II opening in our building if you're interested.

It's in Beebe, Arkansas, which is the teen pregnancy capital of Arkansas, which is the teen pregnancy capital of America, which is the capital of the World. You do the math.

I learned that being a full time student with a full time family and a part time job (and a LOT of TV to watch) leaves no time to read blogs or leave witty comments. For the record, I just OD'd on past posts. My eyes hurt.

    • Tyler Stanton

let me be the first to say…it's nice to have you back.no more hiding behind this “full time student” facade.

  • David Robertson

I loved getting a job, a wife, and a house in April.

I loved re-reading the Count of Monte Cristo

  • glenn

i loved watching kathleen batson lick a video card. i am still laughing about that one and its been a week now. it had to hurt.

  • http://happyhourmary.com Mary

I love Tim Ferris, as well, for the same reason. I get to live vicariously through him!

    Also love Crush it.

  • http://www.overdivulgent.blogspot.com Lauren

I loved my discovery of the blogging community that includes you, Jon Acuff, Kevin Kiegley, Bryan Allain, and Tripp Crosby (all from Donald Miller posting one of your videos and also through my pastor, Pete Wilson). And I loved learning how crazy awesome social networking can be.

I loved learning my place in a new city (moved from Birmingham to Nashville) and relearning time and time again that my perceptions of what I think I will like and enjoy are usually so far off-base from the truth, and that sometimes I just need to give things a chance. Case in point: my very non-traditional, non-denominational, rock-band-in-the-front-and-no-hymns church. That I LOVE.
