The first time I’ve ever wanted to punch my TV.

A perfect example of one of the pet peeves I wrote about the other day.
__

It’s normal to get your not-yet-2-year-old son a set of badminton racquets for Christmas, right?
__

My answer to Bryan Allain’s question the other day: “What’s the dumbest thing in your wallet right now?” I keep 1000 Yen because, well, you never know.

Yesterday’s drawing. Thanks again for all who helped out.

Life Lesson: If you spend too much time obsessing over the framing of your photo, your kid will put his mouth on the syrup bottle and chug it.

My Christmas present to…myself.

Two questions for you:

1. If you have a Keurig, which coffee is the best?

2. Is there some sort of a recycling program for the pods? I feel like I will personally be responsible for 16 new landfills by June.

I work at Starbucks, so if you have a Keurig, you can't have good coffee. You non-tipping sonuhvah…

    • Tyler Stanton

hahaha.seriously though. too soon. my starbucks just got ripped from me. this is how i'm coping………………..tyler stanton

      • http://www.pofgblog.com joerob577

What happened? How did Starbucks get ripped from you?

And I prefer "Newman's Own" for my Keurig, by the way.

Caribou is my favorite K-cup flavor. If you're worried about the waste, you can always get a "my k cup": http://www.amazon.com/Keurig-K-Cup-Reusable-Coffe… or kaps: http://www.amazon.com/Kaps-K-Cups-Reuse-Keurig-Cl

I haven't found a perfect one yet, but they do make those recycle-able filters. Those work wonders for feelings of self-worth. And also for the planet, I guess.

  • James

Got one as a house warming parents from over the top in-laws. I have found the Folger's Millstone breakfast is pretty good. I like the milder brews though, feel free to mock me as you wish below.

    • James

I mean over the top as in they give lavishly to everyone, which is nice to receive but can be a bit hard sometimes.

      • http://www.pofgblog.com joerob577

I feel you, James. My parents gave me a Nikon D3100 this year. It's awesome, but I just keep thinking, "Crap… Now I'm going to have to give gifts like this when I'm older and more able to…"

        • James

It would be a nice problem to have and hopefully my wife and I will get to enjoy Baby Step 7 when we are their age.

    Fred.

There are no words. Fred is a whole other circle of hell.

  • http://overdivulgent.blogspot.com Lauren

    Hot Chocolate. Seriously.

    What?

For actual coffee, I like the Donut Shop ones. I think that's the name. And Paul Newman's Extra Bold. Not sure about recycling, sadly. Here's some info from Keurig about how they're working on it: http://www.keurig.com/social-responsibility.

When did they start putting Conan on Japanese currency?

I got a Keurig this Christmas as well, and ordered some 180 K-Cups in different variety packs to test. So far here are my favorites:

The bold coffees from Coffee People: Jet Fuel, Black Tiger, and Wake-Up Call

The bold from Van Houtee: The Kenyan coffee, and the Eclipse blend.

Great, great, great coffees. And I bought a reuseable filter for my Starbucks beans, but can't get it to work right. It's a waste of time.

    • Tyler Stanton

not sure what problem you're having with it, but i just bought one of those reusable filters too and it was leaking a ton. did some research on the interwebs and found out that the rubber gasket up around the needle needs to be pulled down some to create a seal. i tried it and it works perfectly now.

Keurig?! Bleh. It's never strong enough.

  • lancebychance

Daybreak Morning Blend by Caribou Coffee is just right for me. I stay away from the fufu ones, but my wife is flavored coffee crazy.

  • Leigh

Several things to say. 1. Your sons and the stories that come with them are going to make you lots of money some day so enjoy your down time. (not that your not famous now but . . . well, nevermind). 2. I hate the Keurig because EVERYbody is getting them and bragging about them. You may as well put an apple sticker on your car. 3. Are you 12 in your Driver's license picture? 4. I just opened a Cheezit box almost perfectly and thought of you. I am , however going to write a letter to the Cheezit makers and ask them to take a note from the goldfish folks and make the jumbo box milk carton style. I think I am done.

    • Tyler Stanton

      1. amy and i are doing the best we can to write down everything so we don't forget…and so we can make large amounts of money from them.2. so you're the old “everyone's doing it so i'll show them by not doing it” person? i didn't see that one coming. ps – you should totally get one.3. i think 21.4. cheez-its are the hardest to open perfectly. i feel like it takes the kind of patience and concentration performing an open heart surgery would require.

  • Jw

Newmans bold. Dont know about recycling. I was hardcore keurig user for the last year, until I did the math on $ and kcup consumption. It’s so convenient and so good, I was drinking more coffee (always a fresh cup, why not?).

I’m back on 1,000 hills and French press- keurig is too mu$h

Who was playing 18 thru your living room on Christmas day?

  • Cgg2nd

I've tried all the K-cups. If you like bold coffee, none better than Coffee People Jet Fuel. Also try their Kona and Black Tiger.

  • http://www.pofgblog.com joerob577

Sad day, friend… I'm not a huge Starbuck's guy, but I do know what it feels like to lose "your place"…

  • Jon Rogers

Tully's has the best K-cups. Sipping me some Sumatra right now. Best Sbux replacement for sure!

Coffee People Kona, Wolfgang Puck's French roast, Emeril's New Orleans blend

  • http://joshcollesano.tumblr.com josh collesano

I feel like I need to emphasize that I love coffee and somewhat of a snob sometimes (I have espresso from a local bar in Sicily… where my family lives and is where I'm from). Anyways:

Caribou blends are ok (I've got a box of French Press from Caribou that I like a lot)
Green mountain has a Sumatran espresso that's pretty good
Coffee Peoples "Kona" blend is by far one of my fav's
Emeril's Big Easy Bold is good too

stay away from the flavored coffee's they do a good job of having really nice descriptions but they're nasty, seriously nasty.

  • Mandy Malcolm

My friend at work says her favorite is Donut shop coffee.

  • Brenda Chance

No competition for Kona. Don't worry about that landfill. I will have already filled it before your Keurig says "Ready to Brew."

  • http://www.SoEveryDay.com Lacey

    Ahhh.

I want to eat at Waffle House with all of our children combined.
    It would be glorious.
Or they would all walk away with a virus, head lice and mono.

    Man, I love Baylor.

  • http://www.JanetOberholtzer.com JanetOber

Newman's Own Organics Extra Bold is my favorite.
And thanks, but no thanks with the whole landfill thing … that never crossed my mind, but now I'll think of it every time I have coffee. But seriously, the cups are so small, they won't add to the landfills, they will just fill the cracks between other trash.

My kids have done some crazy stuff, but your son drank from a syrup bottle at Waffle House? Is he up to date on his vaccinations?

  • Prothro

    One kcup word….. Revv.

Oh, and Newmans Own Xtra Bold. And Kona. And Green Mtn Espresso Blend.

    They are like crack.

  • Rodney Eason

I think I was 6 or 7 when two of my friends got Jarts for Christmas. Oh, the fun we had throwing them down the driveway and watching the sparks fly off the tips.

  • http://www.twitter.com/davidrogerc David

I'm obsessed with my Keurig. My favorite flavors are Timothy's Cinnamon Pastry & Green Mountain's Wild Mountain Blueberry. So freaking good. You'll quickly be addicted too, I'm sure of it.

  • http://ilovemrpibb.blogspot.com Greta

I love your children. It's almost like they know they're being social media-ed so they do this awesome stuff.

  • Dana

I'm in love with Starbucks Chai Tea Lattes, and I have to admit that my Keurig makes a better one…try it, you won't regrett it!

  • Renee from GA

Italian Roast by Tully's. I found it by buying a sample box of different brands and blends on Ebay. I liked more of Tully's coffees than any other brand, they seemed richer tasting without being so strong they wore the enamel off my teeth (Jet Fuel, I'm looking at you).

  • http://beckeye.blogspot.com Becki

Newman's Own Extra Bold; Heifer Intl. Blend; Caribou Coffee Caribou blend. The 3 best.

You can always use your own grounds in a little filter to eliminate the waste.

Your question recalled this article I read this summer… it's an issue (I too am an avid recycler), hopefully a solution is coming!! http://www.nytimes.com/2010/08/04/business/energy

  • Dan

I have recently discovered the Caribou Blend (disappointingly doesn't contain actual caribou) and the Nantucket Blend (that one's from Green Mountain Coffee).

For a bit of a change, my wife tried the Celestial Seasonings Sweet Raspberry iced tea k-cup. She said that it was pretty good for coming out of a k-cup.

  • Amy

    they sell reusable filters.
then, you can pick your own coffee.
don't you know to just call me about environmentally friendly options for anything???
