Most Underrated SNL Sketches

April 12th, 2011 - Uncategorized - 17 Comments »

Few things can tell you more about a person than his/her favorite SNL sketches. Two years ago I compiled a list of what I believed were the best obscure and most underrated sketches in the show’s history, but after some serious thought and meditation on the subject, I think it’s time for an updated list. Some will change. Some will stay the same. All will be hilarious.

6. First CityWide Change Bank – “We can give you twenty-five twos.”

5. Lettuce – “That’s not an idiot…that’s a hero.”

4. Nicolas Fehn – “Just real, uh, kinda, smart stuff.”

3. Wedding singers – “That’s not the way we like to do business.”

2. Devil Can’t Write No Love Song – “Fast car, on the highway, on the by-way, Mr. Robotron.”

1. Clownpenis.fart – “A lot of investment companies rushed onto the Internet. But Dillon Edwards took their time.”

What should have made the list? What is your favorite underrated SNL sketch?

*When I was working with Young Life, we made parodies of a couple of these. They’re floating around the interweb somewhere.

    I DRIVE A DODGE STRATUS!

I like the Nicolas Fehn sketch a lot…

You need to look up "Fenced in area" from when Billy Bob Thornton hosted on season 27 ep 6. Genius sketch (the Thanksgiving sketch is hilarious too).

Also, "The office skank" with Cheri O'Terri (when John Goodman hosted: season 25 ep 18) is probably one of the funniest of all time… at least to my wife and I.

Other notables: Leatherman w/ Brittney Spears, Greased Lightning w/Walken, Googly eyed plants w/Walken, the first person in history to dance (Sudekis), Fartface w/Josh Brolin, White trash bed and breakfast w/Swayze…. I guess this list could go on for a while.

Dr. Mo is correct that Dodge Stratus needs to be added. Hilarious. Your choices of "Devil", "Fehn", and "Wedding Singers" are extremely solid.

One of my all-time favorite SNL sketches featured Tracy Morgan and Maya Rudolph singing a song on a NYC subway car. This wasn't a humorous sketch, but somehow stuck with me years later. I still haven't been able to locate a clip of it.

is this what you're looking for? http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xfgfb8_corn-chip

I don't think that's the one he's referring to. I'm pretty sure it's the one that reminded me of the old 70's black musical cartoon numbers, kinda like you'd see on Fat Albert. She's playing an older lady and singing with attitude. It wasn't funny at all, but pretty sure it wasn't meant to be.

That said, my wife and I STILL do corn chips/nail tips any time someone mentions corn chips…

@Kate – Unfortunately, that's not the one, but I definitely *love* that sketch.

@Chad – I still do Tracy Morgan's "robot corn chip nail tip" dance at the end of the commercial at random times. Personally, I think of this song whenever I hear "Tandoori chicken." And, yes, you've identified the sketch I was originally thinking of. Glad someone else remembers it (I've never really seen it on reruns)!!

Looking for this skit, or even the song for years. No luck.

    • Cortiago

I think this is the episode you are talking about:

      Season 27, 2002, Apr 13
      Musical Sketch: On the Subway

When Zach galifinakis hosted snl a few years back his bidet skit was hilarious.. Just a stupid thing to make a skit about. A European device that wipes your butt for you

  • Chris

it didn't even make it to the show but the "Old Prospector" skit off the Best of Will Ferrell disk is one of my all-time favorite things i've ever seen from SNL.

My favorite – yet underrated – SNL sketches are as follows:

"Taintless Ted" – This is an extremely odd sketch in which Horatio Sanz decides to drive to a McDonalds two hours away (because they have the best french fries) and make it back in time for Inside The Actor's Studio (which starts in five minutes). He ends up in a car accident and has to have his taint removed. Conan O'Brien plays the doctor who has a hard time pronouncing Ted's last name, which is "Brown". Will Ferrell plays a sleazy guy named Freddie Gandon who shows up at the hospital with Ted's wife and delivers the most memorable line of the sketch: "Sorry to hear about your taint, Ted. But don't worry . . . I've been sexxin' up your wife 'Freddie-Gandon-Style'!"

Soap Opera Doctor – In this sketch, Alec Baldwin plays an actor who portrays a doctor on a soap opera. He's being interviewed by (I think) Jan Hooks and Nora Dunn, and they're discussing how believable his character is. Baldwin talks about all the research he did to make sure his portrayal was authentic, but clips of his performance contradict his "research". While acting as the doctor he mispronounces Yale University (Yal-eee), anal canal (ay-nel cay-nel), and both malignant and benign tumors (MAL-ig-NANT and Beh-nig).

OZ-WEE-PAY! – In this skit, Nicolas Cage and Julia Sweeney are discussing possible baby names for their soon-to-be-birthed child. Every name Julia Sweeney comes up with is quickly skewered by Cage who can think of multiple ways the child will suffer ridicule as a result of the unfortunate moniker. The names get more "normal", yet Cage still finds issues. At the end of the sketch, the doorbell rings and it's Rob Schneider as a delivery guy. Schneider says, "I've got a package here for Mr. A$$wipe." Nicolas Cage roars, "It's OZ-WEE-PAY!" Still one of the most quoted SNL sketches in my family.

Astronaut Jones – I loved all of these sketches. The fact that the theme song is twice as long as the actual "show" is hilarious.

Census – Tim Meadows plays a census worker who shows up at the doorstep of Christopher Walken's apartment. This is another extremely odd sketch, but Christopher Walken's mannerisms make it work.

one of the best is with Jake Gyllenhal and Maya Rudolph. They are trying to set up a friend, who is in a wheelchair, with a girl, who is also in a wheelchair. When asked if it was just because they were both in wheelchairs their response is Maya screaming WHAAT!? and Jake screaming NOOO!!

By far one of my favorites and the only place i can find it is with Asian subtitles. I still recommend watching it.

My favorite it the John Belushi sketch where he outlives all his former cast members and is reminiscing about them. Channel 56 in Boston repeated it the day he died.

One if my favourites had someone playing a character named Matt Damon meeting actual Matt Damon and a girl named Pat Damon… etc Never seen it since it aired though!

  • Nick

I love that Netflix has ever season available. I currenlty have been watching a lot of season 20 (1995) which was also the lowest rated season of all time. Anywho there was an episode i was watching last night with Bob Saget and they did Americas Funniest Hate Videos. I was dying. My favorite was teh KKK member who got to close the cross and caught on fire. But what makes it really funny is that Bob Saget is doing all the stupid voices he did for Americas Funniest Home Videos. It was great.

  • Jon

i cannot believe Gus Chiggins didnt make this list. funniest sketch ever.
