Love List

August 23rd, 2011 - Uncategorized - 54 Comments »

Amidst all of the venting and complaining that typically goes on around here, it’s nice to take a day and reflect on the things we love. Not the big, important things, mind you. We all love those. Let’s embrace life’s more trivial pleasures.

Today’s Love List is brought to you by Mendmark, one of my site partners committed to creatively communicating the message of love. Take a few minutes to check out their site and see what they do and why they do it.

But for now, the Love List. Ready?

Mashups – It’s hard to listen to normal songs anymore when I’m running. Girl Talk and DJ Earworm have spoiled me. I need more. Any other mashup artists I need to know about?

Kitchen Nightmares UK – I’ve openly railed Gordon Ramsey here on the blog before. But after watching this show, I repent. I’m currently obsessed. Check it out on Netflix. And be prepared for some language of the colorful variety.

Walking down the wrong row of cars when I’m being parking lot stalked – Am I a terrible person? Perhaps. Do I have more fun than you in crowded parking lots? Definitely.

Tune In Radio app – Listen to any radio station, anywhere in the country…for free? Yes please. Scott Van Pelt and Dave Ramsey are now back in my life where they belong.

Dairy Queen commercials – When you have Mary Lou Retton falling out of a piñata, you have my attention. When you have waterski boxing and guitars that sound like dolphins, you have me hooked.

Mendmark shirt – I’m not just saying this because they’re a site partner. The shirt looks great, is a perfect fit…and, if worn during a putt-putt competition, enables you to crush your opponent.

New Pair of Vibrams – After a year and a half of wearing out the first pair, I finally upgraded to these. And they’re delightful.

The Onion – Nothing makes me laugh harder in a shorter amount of time. You should be following them on Twitter if you’re not already.

Reminiscing about old baseball cards – There’s nothing I like to wax nostalgic about more than Fleer Ultra, Diamond Kings, and Stadium Club. See? How awesome was that?

What about you?

What trivial things are on your Love List today? I’ll pick some comments at random to win some free Mendmark stuff.

I’m not sure what trivial things I love but check out The Hood Internet and then Pretty Lights for more quality mashups. they are no girl talk but they have some good stuff out.

    Loves:
-The sound of an acoustic guitar around a campfire (I realize how corny this sounds, but try and dispute it)
    -The opening scenes in LOST
-Getting an update of the Phillies score on my iPod touch when I'm in an unexpected Wi-Fi area
-The instant gratification that Google offers
-Hearing a band for the first time and knowing instantly that their music will become a staple in all future iTunes playlists
    -TastefullyOffensive.com

    1. any normal item that is made tiny. Like the little cartons of golfish. or mini coke cans

    2. wearing new make-up for the first time (you can't relate… but trust me)

    3. when no one lets in the jerk who is merging into the turn lane at the last possible second . We all band together.

    4. when i turn on the TV and there is a random Law and Order marathon on. and i have no plans for the next 4 hours.

    5. finding out i had a beer hiding in the back of the fridge, when i thought i was out

  • mattstedjan

Norwegian Recycling makes some good mashups (listen to "Acoustic Alchemy"). Totally agree on DJ Earworm–he's great. A good resource for mashups is mashupyourbootz.blogspot.com. I think my overall favorite is "Black Beatles" by Loo and Placido (It can be found on volume 23 on that site).

    • Tyler Stanton

good call on that site. it's freaking loaded.

  • Rick

While being parking-lot-stalked, I love to put my bag in the trunk, stand at my car door for a minute looking like I forgot something and walk back toward the store. Once the stalker passes by my space, I go back to my car and drive away with smug self-satisfaction. What a sad, sad game I play.

  • http://edhyndman.com Elizabeth

I love that ding noise my car makes when I leave the lights on. I drove a car that didn't have a ding for about 10 years and can't tell you how many times my battery died as a result.

    1. Blockbuster online. Everytime I see that little blue and white envelope in the mail, I'm 6 yrs. old and it's freaking Christmas morning.

    2. When my dad uses common sayings, but gets a part of it wrong. For example: "Yeah, she really talked my arm off." Makes me laugh. Every time.

    3. Dominic West in The Wire. I've never loved a brooding, alcoholic, ladies man more. Crap, yes I have. Don Draper. How is it that TV shows make you love the bad guys? Also, should I be concerned that two out of three things I love right now have to do with movies/TV?? Good, I didn't think so.

    • Tyler Stanton

I LOVE when people (or more likely, me) get common expressions wrong. The other day I heard someone say "he really wears his head on his shoulder" when he meant "he wears his heart on his sleeve". And he was a radio host.

    1) The Help. Just finished it last night. Closing the cover felt like saying goodbye to an old friend.

    2) Dark chocolate-covered edamame from Trader Joe's. Yes, please.

    3) Josh Groban is going to guest-star on "The Office" this season. Much like #2, it's a beautiful collision of two of my most favorite things.

    • Tyler Stanton

Chocolate edamame? There's nothing I've ever wanted to try less. But Groban on The Office…glorious.

  • Drewpac
  • Sarah

Check out White Panda for some more mashups.

    • Tyler Stanton

      YES! I'm loving this.

Any time anyone anywhere says "Clear Eyes, Full Hearts, Can't Lose."

    • Tyler Stanton

Most of the time it's you saying it, right?

      • http://www.knoxmccoy.com Knox McCoy

        100% yes.

  • http://brynnloves.wordpress.com Brynn

    1) Guessing the time within a minute.
    2) Finding an extra french fry at the bottom of the takeout bag.
    3) Getting out of class early.

    Apparently, I am a child.

    • emily

re: 2) you call these stray taters "bagglers," too, right?

    Other mashup artists/remix DJ's:

    Ludachrist
    RJD2
    Prefuse 73
    Diplo
and, of course, Danger Mouse's "Gray Album"

    • http://thegboat.net/ The Joseph Craven

Oh of COURSE Danger Mouse. And I'm a fan of RJD2 as well. Good job, sir. Very well done.

    • Tyler Stanton

I shall be checking these out asap.

My wife's smile. My Daughter's bearhug. Catching my son doing his homework. Watching my boys make music together. Love is simple.

    1. Ikea. It's second only to Disney in my list of magical places to visit. Made a trip today – now I have a chair to assemble.

    2. Watching Lost the second time – just wrapped up season 2.

    3. Naps.

PS – I feel you should be more concerned about your parking lot stalkers. Maybe carry some mace…or a gun…or at least one of those "personal protection whistles".

  • Kellee

    Getting retweeted.

  • sethcaddell

Just got a stand up desk for my office. By repurposing an old book shelf. Satisfaction? For sure.

    • Tyler Stanton

Really? I've been thinking of doing that for a while. Would you recommend it?

      • sethcaddell

I'm only on my second day of it, so it's still freaking awesome… however, I kept my old desk in the corner just in case I'm wrong about the stand up. I'm not too proud to change back if my feet decide they hate the idea next week, just too proud to ask someone to help me move a desk out of my office, then back in.

Mashup Artists: Circle of Fifths and The Milkmen. I love standing facing the back of elevators to freak people out, ordering Starbucks drinks based more on their syllable complexity than their taste, and saving my orange m&ms for last.

  • Rocky

I love Shiraz and dark chocolate. I love sleeping in when it's raining outside. I love snow days. I love finding a good deal.

    • Tyler Stanton

Sleeping in when it's raining outside FTW!

i love responding to people who are talking too loud in starbucks.

my husband occasionally loves facing everyone when he gets on an elevator.

    • http://www.davepettengill.net DavePettengill

The facing people in the elevator thing is an awesome idea I will definitely have to try that.

The DQ commercials are awesome – not just bubbles, bubbles with kittens inside!! I also love Frank's RedHot sauce by Durkee's….and original Chapstik.

Jurassic Park – I will never get tired of watching that movie. My only regret is that I can't clutch my nylon velcro dinosaur wallet while I watch it anymore, like I did as a child.

Sunshowers – Nothing better than a good sunshower in the middle of a hot run.

Asking "What?" When Someone Says "is that cool or what?" – 15 years later and my brother stills says "I said is that cool or what!" about 3 times before he punches me in the earlobe.

The Drive Through Car Wash – I'm still 7 years old.
