Love List

July 7th, 2010 - Uncategorized - 41 Comments »

In the midst of my various Hate Lists and Pet Peeve rants, I feel like it’s only healthy that I keep a running list of the things I love. You know, just to balance things out a bit. Here are some things that I hope to never do without.

1. Pre-sneeze faces
To whom it may concern: Please start a blog that consists entirely of pictures of people about to sneeze. This is the funniest face a human can make.

2. Burnt Cheez-Its
Every now and then, an entire box of Cheez-Its has been baked a little too long. Each square has been bronzed to perfection, creating an entirely different taste altogether.

3. When friends self-correct a bad handshake
One of the worst things in life is when a quick grab or foul tip occurs and the two parties pretend it never happened. The rest of the day is either spent thinking less of the other person or kicking yourself for the poor performance. You know you’ve found a true friend when he calls for a do-over on the spot.

4. Strawberry Laffy Taffy
The single best candy on the market. I sometimes tuck these away in my cheek like a wad of chewing tobacco, which might explain my freakishly high cavity count. No Ms. Dental Hygienist – I will not stop doing this or chewing on ice. Please stop advising me in this way.

5. Audiobooks
Thanks to Tripp Crosby (former blogger), I now refuse to run without listening to an audiobook. For about 75% of the run, it takes my mind off of the fact that I’m partaking in an idiotic activity. A $7/month subscription to Audible has been one of the leading contributors to health.

6. Outback’s Bloomin’ Onion
This is the official appetizer of tylerstanton.com. If it wouldn’t cause my arteries to burst in multiple places, I would eat this American delicacy every day.

What trivial things do you love? Rainbows and good parking spaces don’t count. Even if you don’t write them in the comments, at least take some time to think about– You know what? Screw that. Write them in the comments.

Thanks for the Audio book tip. Good idea.

The only thing I disagree with is the Strawberry Laffy Taffy. Banana Laffy Taffy is actually the best. Everything else on your list is "aces", though. :)

I used to try to burn Cheez-It's on my own if it were a "normal" box to achieve the flavor – I always failed. I think they should release Well Done as a flavor.

that's crazy. i was actually going to pose the question, \”has anyone ever tried to recreate this themselves?\” in the post. that's very, very disappointing that it can't be done at home.

It should be noted that my only attempts were with a BIC lighter (you know, the one that every non-smoking high school student kept in his night stand for no reason). I'm still holding out hope for the "conventional oven method"…I just never thought of that at 12:30am while watching Conan.

i'm all about the Auto-correct handshake. similar to texting – if you get the word wrong, your phone will usually try to guess the closest thing to what you're trying to spell. When you go for the handshake but miss – you auto-correct to the closest thing possible. if you're quick – you can move on. otherwise you have to delete and start all over again.

I would also add waffle fries to the list of favorites. regular fries just don't have the surface area to get enough dipping sauce on the fries for optimum enjoyment. Waffle fries are the perfect scoop for your dipping sauce of choice. which is polynesian sauce from chic-fil-a if you know what's good for you.

I love Chipotle, writing blog posts, and spending hours of my time doing nothing. I'd never heard of the burnt cheez-it. I'll have to check into that.

I love the fact that yogurt and ice cream shops have finally grasped the concept that teddy grahams make a delicious accessory to dessert. I love how my grandmother calls Facebook "Facespace." I also love how my grandmother calls text-messaging "Tex-mexican" (We're from Texas… Go figure).

Unsolicited affection from any of my 3 kids.
Coffee served at precisely the right temperature for immediate drinkability.
An honest snort from a laughing friend.

  • Kunte Kente

    Costco's cafe

Netflix’s watch instantly feature. My wife loaded up the kids and went to her mom’s house to vist last week, so I had a whole week to myself. I made it through the entire first two seasons of Dexter thanks to Netflix.

Pulling out weeds with such brute strength that you fall back from your squat/crouching position, but have a gigantic root (and sense of accomplishment) to show for it. The worst: The same technique leaves you on your butt with a handful of weed leaves, the root still in place and holding on for dear life.

i, too, have recently discovered the joys of audiobooks. perfect for long road trips late at night. david sedaris is one of the few people that can keep me listening to him at 2am on the penn turnpike.

other loves: buffalo sauce from chick-fil-a, a great zit to pop, post day-in-the-sun nap, the word "rend" (especially when in a song lyric, ex. "odalisque" by the decemberists), and suggestion boxes.

  • brent

Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens. Oh and I also love the 49 cent QT fountains drink.

My favorite is that moment when your head hits the pillow and all is quiet in the house.(We have 5 kids.) A close runner up is waking up and realizing that it is still quiet and you don't have to get up for another hour.

  • Bryan

Floss Sticks. Nothing had ever made me floss more than once a month until I got these

Dinner Rolls. I might try the anti-Atkins diet and only eat these for a few months.

Not having to call people back. The best present anyone could ever give me.

  • Holly

New school supplies – I'm a teacher, so I still get to go out and buy new pens, pencils, rulers, highlighters, notebooks, packs of college ruled paper, markers, etc.

Playing in the sprinklers with my nieces and nephews – there should never be an age limit on playing in the sprinklers. (Slip and slides, on the other hand ….)

Killing flies with my bare hands – it's like I have Jedi skills.

    1. Community Coffee medium roast – one of Louisiana's finest products
    2. Free music downloads – I will download and listen to almost anything that is free. I have found some of my favorite artists/bands this way.
    3. When my 2 year old son tries to sing the Imperial March (Darth Vader's theme) from Star Wars. It makes me one proud geek dad.

    • Kim S.

I am with you on Free music downloads. I have found some awesome sites that weekly, bi-weekly and monthly, send me emails with free music downloads and I get introduced to new music. I LOVE IT!

      • http://intensedebate.com/profiles/johndarm johndarm

Kim, I would love to know what sites you get the free downloads from. You can reply here or if you want you can email me, johnd_arm@yahoo.com. Thanks

        • Kim S.

Those sites are freeccm.com , hearitfirst.com , and purevolume.com . Itunes also has a free single every week. Just go to their website and look at the very bottom for the free music download or the single of the week, something like that.

Naps. Just in general. For me, for the kids…just naps.

That back-in-school snow day feeling when something is canceled…even if it's an activity/class/meeting I enjoy. There's that frisson of joy when it hits me, "free time! I don't have to go!"

“Super Chips” from ye olde Tex-Mex spot. These are the chips that become entwined in the dance of deep-fried love whilst cooking. 4-5 chips combine to form the delicious anomaly…like Voltron, but with food.

    Cracker Barrel bacon.
Buying awesomely hot shoes that will only go with one dress and I'll probably only wear once or twice, but they're awesome!
